Blog entry Hunger, In Your Words

27 August 2012

Every day the Freerice community raises meals for those who need it most around the world. Most of us never have to think about where our next meal will come from, or think of ways to feed our family.

After the launch of the new World Hunger subject on Freerice, we asked our community on the Freerice Facebook page and Twitter to send us their thoughts on hunger. Here's what they had to say:

"We can go to a restaurant, take a look at the menu, order whatever we wish to... That could be some people's greatest dream and yet to be impossible." - Emel Civan, on Facebook

"#hunger is individually and collectively dreadful, yet it is so solvable. we should work together on this once and for all." - @jlms_qkw, on Twitter

"I think with waste on the increase and charity on the decline, places like #FreeRice.com will be asked to fill a mighty gap." - @AtomikDaddy, on Twitter

"#hunger is a matter of educating & spreading programs; to educating people about permaculture & sustainable living practices." - @niargo4MARS, on Twitter

"The people who are fortunate enough to never worry about being hungry should help the less fortunate so they don't need to worry." - @intotheechelon, on Twitter

"I think that people should try harder to end it." - @SarahAlruwaily, on Twitter

"Hunger and Homelessnes, two of the most important issues the world must focus on...
Related link: Number two (2) is a great community program that can be replicated around the country and beyond..." - Margaret Ibasco, on Facebook

"Hunger is one of among others important issues that we can fight together as a human being. The world is totally enough to feed peoples in the world. That is why we should have shared with the other and be independent with planting ourselves staple food even in a small places." - Sukma Wijayanti, on Facebook

"We can send pieces of metal to far flung reaches of the galaxy but we can't feed our kids. Hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of food is wasted, daily while children starve. This in my opinion is a crime comparable to genocide! More is spent every 2 weeks on arms the same amount could feed, clothe, shelter, educated and provide medical care for every citizen of the planet. What the hell is wrong with this species! END EXTREME POVERTY NOW!" - Cris Fulton, on Facebook

"Two points. One, feeding people would be far less harrowing if there were less of us. It's in everybody's interests to figure out how to slow population growth globally.
Second, there are a million ridiculous things more expensive and less worthwhile for the good of humanity than NASA's budget, particularly after the funding tourniquet applied since the Cold War's conclusion." - Tim Harrison, on Facebook

"Welcome to world war 3; "the silent war"...." - Buster Brown, on Facebook

All these horrendous things: worldwide hunger, more frequent natural disasters, more murder e.t.c are happening because they are signs that we are getting closer to the day of judgement (i.e the day were ALL people will be risen from their death, the earth will be flattened, and god (Allah) will judge every peson according to their actions and decide wether your afterlife will be spent in heaven or hell. these are signs to remind you to help others out, thank god that you are in unharmed environment e.t.c (this was my opinion from an islamic point of view)

I think hunger means that you dont have the proper amount of food you need to survive and that you are almost dying because you have nothing to eat thats what i think hunger means and thats why im trying to help as many people as i can.

Yeah i agree that we should be helping starving people instead of going to different planets. Mars just looks like Arizona! People are LOSEING THEIR LIVES around the world, due to our oblivion. Kudos to all of the free ricers around the world.

If we have enough money to be able to build buikding every year and to go to mars and to do useless things then why shouldn't we be able to solve the hunger problem huh?
