Blog entry 6 Reasons Next Generation Needs Us To Solve Hunger

11 May 2012

We already know that hunger is the world's greatest solvable problem. In addition to the reason why we can and should end it, shared with you last week through this short video, nourishing hungry kids today helps the next generation to better deal with any problems they have to face. Read on to find out why.

It boils down this: people need strong minds and bodies to seize opportunities and pull themselves out of poverty. And to do this, the right nutrition at the right time is needed.

Here are 3 facts to illustrate this point (find the other 3 facts here):

1. Science has proven that a child’s first 1,000 days – in the womb and up to 2 years old – are critical to their physical and mental development. Critically undernourished children suffer irreversible damage.

2. Nourished women have healthier babies with stronger immune systems for life. Whie undernourished mothers pass malnutrition on to the next generation by giving birth to smaller, weaker babies.

3. Proper nutrition during the first two years of life can result in an increase in lifetime earnings by as much as 46%.

You would never think that rice could help so much. Thank you for and everyone who continues to play on it and earn rice for Africa and other poor areas.

I never knew how much hunger does to a person either, because I have never experienced it. We in the US take the most basic necessity - food- for granted every day. We are so blessed, it's even more of a motivation to me to help ensure others the simple blessing of a meal. Thank you FreeRice, the World Food Programme, and all the other sponsors, for providing the means for me to be a part of something like this!

@cape of good hope Thank you for your comment, and for taking the time to raise rice! If we each do a little, we can have great impact. And playing Freerice is a good place to start, particularly for those who can't afford to donate.

It's great that realising the extent and reach of hunger makes you appreciate what you have more. However, it's important to remember that there is already enough food in the world to feed everyone. The problem is access to the food.

So due to financial constraints, or geographic location, almost 1 billion people worldwide go to bed hungry.

We need to improve access to the food, and this is done through some of WFP's long term projects including School Meal, Purchase for Progress and others. Take a look here:

this is sad to see when there is enough food for every one but those who have easy access to food ( myself included) waste so much of it by just throwing it away when we have children who can't find anything to eat and yet we keep it all for ourselves. it makes me.... not sad... but more disappointed that we don't do more to help these pepole
