Blog entry Cambodia: A woman's struggle to beat the floods
Chin Cheng Hong’s house is built on stilts, but this year the floodwaters have risen so high in Cambodia that even this was not enough to protect her. When the waters crept through her floorboards, she knew things were really bad.
All the rice raised on Freerice has been going towards Cambodia since June 2011. They need our help now more than ever - in recent months the country has seen its worst floods in over decade, with 1.5 million people affected and about 250,000 people displaced by the flooding. So, please invite your friends and family to play, let's rice up for Cambodia!
Cheng Hong is a mother of five - the monthly rice ration she receives from the World Food Programme, supported by Freericers, is important for her families survival.
“The river came up right over my floor,” says Cheng Hong. “My children are not going to school which is a concern for me. With our tobacco crop destroyed, it’s going to be difficult to find money to buy food. Of all the things I am getting today the most important is the rice.”
The scale of the crisis and the damage done to agricultural fields also means that the impact of this year’s floods will be felt for many months to come.
Cheng Hong knows she faces a tough struggle, at least she now knows she and her family will have enough rice for the next month thanks to WFP’s and Freericers assistance.
Freerice is maintained by and supports the United Nations World Food Programme, the world's largest humanitarian organisation fighting hunger worldwide. To find out more go to WFP.org
hawktalon, thats a good aditood! ur saying u want 2 help the les fornitit and the people u saw in cambodie. keep up the good work hawktalon!
I heard about this site quite a while ago, but didn't really go on. Then in August my family went to Malaysia to visit relatives, but spent a few days in Cambodia. We got to see one of the villages on the river as tourists, and it was really sad to actually see poverty with one's own eyes. This motivated me to get on freerice. Once I got home form vacation (where I had internet access) I made freerice my homepage, and have donated 200 gains of rice at least before getting on any of my other websites. I know it's not much, but I've been trying. It means so much to me now to know that the rice is going to Cambodia. I knew and was always happy that it would go to the poor, but I feel a special connection now knowing it's Cambodia. I'll be trying harder now for sure. :)
